Paddle 2008 Wrap-up

September 6th, 2008

2008 Paddle to Cowichan and North American Indigenous Games 2008 concluded with great success. Hands raised to Cowichan Tribe, Elders, Event coordinators, Staff, Volunteers and Journey participants!

Well Done everyone. All working together help make it a good experience. Each has a story to tell. Keep the memories alive by sharing the good things you have learned.

It’s never too early to start planning for next year - Paddle to Suquamish, WA 2009 will be here before we know it. Stay tuned here for news, info and updates.

To view the former version of Tribal Journeys info-site CLICK HERE. Note: That site was temporarily disabled (on day the canoes landed at Cowichan) by an unfortunate incident involving a non-native man claiming to “own the copyright for the paddle design” - the same shape and design that has been in use by the Coastal Tribes for countless ages.  Although it was bogus, our webhost believed his false claim to own the ancient design and they shut down all our websites. In spite of the false claim and the site being disabled, we still had over twenty thousand hits (visitors to the site) during that time frame.

Any input or feedback on the issue of non-native / illegal attempts to copyright Native Indigenous items and designs, please leave your comment including how to contact you (private info won’t be posted or misused).

Transition Time

August 2nd, 2008

As the events hosted by Cowichan are in transition - Tribal Journeys ends Aug. 1 and North American Indigenous Games begins Aug 3 - the TribalJourneys.com website/blog is in transition to a new web server, new look and more. During this process the links and photos will be added and we hope to have the original info returned within the next few days. We appreciate your patience during the transition period and we hope to provide all the needed information.

Canoes Update July 24th

July 21st, 2008

South Sound Route canoes (starting at Squaxin on July 14th) landed July 23 at Elwha (Port Angeles - Hollywood Beach).  They will have a two-day rest at Elwha. 5 AM Friday July 25th Canoes will take off from Elwha (Hollywood Beach) crossing the Straight of Juan de Fuca to Esquimalt / Songhees. Those include:  Cowlitz, Chehalis, Squaxin Island, Nisqually, Puyallup, Muckleshoot, Suquamish, Port Gambles S’Klallam, Jamestown S’Klallam, and Elwha Klallam

Those traveling the East Coast: Check with Kuleet Bay to confirm IF there is a landing July 27th. (Info sent by Jerri who received word from Dallas Brock of the Kuleet Bay Band said no landing there. Research is being done to find out solid info.) This will affect the Salish Sea Route and the Northern Route of canoes. Dawnda will have the final word on this.

Other canoes that should be on the water (we haven’t heard from them directly but assume they are on schedule).

West Coast Canoes (starting at Quinault July 17th) should be landing at Beecher Bay today July 24, 2008.  Next stop – Songhees.

San Juan Islands Route canoes (starting at Nooksack July 19th) should be landing at Roche Harbor today for a two-day stay over.  Next stop - Tsawout (E. Saanich)

The combined groups: Northern Route canoes, the Salish Sea Route, and the Canoe Families from the far North (Haida Gwaii, Nisgaa, Tsimpsian, NWT, Yukon) should be landing at Qualicum today, July 24th. Next stop – Nanoose.
